Captain America is the alter-ego of Steven Rogers, an American super-soldier and agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.. He gained his superhuman strength during World War II from an experimental formula which enhances human physiology. The last surviving member of the Allied taskforce the Howling Commandos, Rogers is now the leader of the superhero team the Avengers.

Captain America was created to boost American national morale in the Second World War and act as an equal to his nemesis, the Red Skull. After years of being frozen in the Atlantic, Rogers was revived by S.H.I.E.L.D. and became a superhero once more.

Based on the character by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, this incarnation also burrows elements from alternate versions of the character, such as the Ultimates incarnation and Chris Evans' portrayal in the film Captain America: The First Avenger.

Biography[]

Steve Rogers was born in Manhattan on the convienient date of July 4, 1917 to Irish immigrants Sarah and Joseph Rogers. His father would die in his childhood and his mother of pneumonia while he was a teenager. Rogers grew up in an orphanage where he met and befriended James "Bucky" Barnes. A sickly young man with a courageous heart, Rogers was one of many Americans who supported American intervention in the Second World War. When the United states joined the war, Rogers tried several times to sign up in the army, but was numerously denied due to his poor health.

Rogers met with Dr. Erskine, an intelligent German scientist who had drawn out plans to create a super soldier capable of defeating the Nazis. Project Rebirth was a success, but Dr. Erskine was assassinated and his work destroyed by Heinz Kruger, a HYDRA agent dedicated to Johann Schmidt.

Rogers was allowed into the army, and given a costume resembling the American flag to support Allied ideals. He served in many successful missions in Europe, the Pacific and North Africa.

When frozen in the sea after what would be his final mission against HYDRA, Rogers was preserved in suspended animation thanks to his super soldier serum. He was thawed out 80 years later by S.H.I.E.L.D., and was soon appointed leader of Project Avenger.

Powers/weapons[]

The super-soldier serum perfected Captain America's physiology to the peak of human fitness. He is able to run at incredible speeds and manage large weights. He also has an accelerated healing ability which allows him to recover from injury. It is said that he could beat any professional Oplympian if he tried.

Captain America was known to carry a side-arm in the Second World War, and even to carry a Thompson machine gun. However, his official weapon is his rounded vibranium shield, painted with a motif resembling the American flag. The shield is able to absorb energy and deflect bullets harmlessly, and also returns to him when thrown accurately.
